Faith for the Next Step

“Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.”
Psalm 119:105
“By faith, Abraham, when he was called, obeyed to go out to the place which he was to receive for an inheritance. He went out, not knowing where he went.”
Hebrews 11:8
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and don't lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.”
Proverbs 3:5-6

Most of us want the whole map before we start walking. We want to know how the job search ends, whether the diagnosis turns out fine, where the relationship is going. Not knowing feels like standing at the edge of a dark room, afraid to move.

But Scripture describes God's word as a lamp to our feet, not a floodlight over the whole valley. An ancient lamp lit maybe a step or two ahead. That was the design. Enough light to move forward, not enough to remove the need for trust.

Abraham was told to go to a land he would be shown later. The disciples were told to follow before they were told where. Again and again, faith in the Bible looks less like certainty and more like obedience in the half-light.

This is not God being withholding. It is God being relational. If we had the whole map, we would likely put down the hand of the One who drew it. The not-knowing keeps us close.

So what is your next step? Not the next ten. Just the next one. Maybe it is sending the email, making the call, opening your Bible before your phone, or simply saying out loud, "I trust You with what I can't see."

You do not need a bigger faith to take a small step. You need a faithful God, and you already have Him. Walk in the light you have today, and trust that tomorrow's light will arrive right on time.

Reflect

What is one small, concrete step of trust you have been putting off because you cannot see the whole path?

Pray

Father, I confess I want to see everything before I move. Thank You that You see what I cannot. Give me courage for just the next step today, and keep my hand in Yours as I take it. Amen.
