Fruit Takes Seasons
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith.”
“I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in me, and I in him, the same bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”
“He will be like a tree planted by the streams of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also does not wither. Whatever he does will prosper.”
Nobody walks out to an orchard the week after planting and demands apples. Everyone understands fruit takes seasons. Yet we hold our own growth to a different standard. We expect to be patient by next month, peaceful by next Sunday, kind on demand. When we fall short, we conclude something must be wrong with us.
Paul's list in Galatians is not a scorecard; it is fruit — "love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith." Fruit grows slowly, from the inside out, and only where the branch stays connected. Jesus said it plainly: "I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in me, and I in him, the same bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing."
Notice what the branch's job is. Not straining. Not white-knuckling joy into existence. Remaining. Staying attached to the source. The Psalmist puts the same truth in soil and water: the one who delights in God's word is "like a tree planted by the streams of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season." In its season — not overnight, not on our schedule, but faithfully, when the season arrives.
So if your patience is thin and your joy is quiet this week, do not panic and do not quit. Ask a better question: where am I rooted? A few honest minutes with God each morning will do more for your fruit than a hundred resolutions.
Stay connected. The harvest is not in doubt — it is simply growing, at the pace of grace.
Reflect
Which fruit do you wish appeared instantly — and what would it mean to let God grow it in season instead?
Pray
Lord, I want to be fruitful more than I want to be fast. Keep me connected to You, the true vine. Grow what only You can grow in me — and give me grace for the seasons in between. Amen.
