Still Waters
“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul.”
“Be still, and know that I am God.”
“But those who wait for the Lord will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.”
Sheep are not known for being calm. They startle easily, and a frightened sheep will not drink from fast-moving water. A good shepherd knows this, so he searches out still pools where his flock can finally drink in peace.
That is the picture behind Psalm 23: "He leads me beside still waters." The Lord is not a taskmaster pushing us to perform. He is a Shepherd who knows exactly what our anxious hearts need, and who leads us toward rest.
We often resist rest. We feel guilty slowing down, as if our worth depends on our output. But notice the psalm says He makes me lie down. Sometimes rest is not a reward for finishing; it is a gift we receive in the middle of unfinished things.
Where are your still waters? Maybe it is a morning walk without headphones. Ten quiet minutes with the Psalms. A Sunday afternoon with your phone in another room. These are not luxuries. They are places where the Shepherd restores your soul.
If you feel restless today, consider that the Shepherd may be inviting you to stop, breathe, and drink. You do not have to earn it. You only have to follow.
The valley may still be ahead. But He goes with you, and He knows where the quiet water is.
Reflect
What are your "still waters," and when was the last time you let the Shepherd lead you there?
Pray
Good Shepherd, I have been running hard and resting little. Lead me to still waters today. Quiet my heart, restore my soul, and remind me that I lack nothing with You. Amen.
