The Weight You Can Set Down
“And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.”
“Bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.”
Unforgiveness is heavy. We carry it like a backpack full of stones, each one labeled with a name or a moment. We tell ourselves holding on keeps us safe, or keeps the other person accountable. Mostly, it just keeps us tired.
Forgiveness is often misunderstood. It is not pretending the hurt was small. It is not automatically restoring trust. It is not saying, "That was fine." Forgiveness is choosing to release the debt to God, the One who sees everything and judges rightly.
Paul ties our forgiving to how we have been forgiven: "just as God also in Christ forgave you." When we remember the size of the grace we have received, it slowly loosens our grip on what others owe us.
This rarely happens in a single moment. Sometimes you forgive the same offense every morning for a season, handing it back to God each time the memory surfaces. That is not failure. That is faithfulness.
If you are not ready, start by being honest. Tell God how angry or hurt you are. The Psalms are full of raw emotion, and God did not edit it out. Honesty is often the doorway to release.
You do not have to carry this forever. There is a weight you can set down today, not because the other person deserves it, but because you were never meant to bear it alone.
Reflect
Is there a name or a memory you have been carrying? What would it look like to hand it to God today, even just for today?
Pray
Father, You know the hurt I carry and the names attached to it. I do not want to hold this forever. Help me release what I cannot fix, and heal what I cannot reach. Thank You for forgiving me first. Amen.
