You Belong Here
“For as the body is one, and has many members, and all the members of the body, being many, are one body; so also is Christ.”
“But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body, just as he desired.”
“For we have many members in one body, and all members don't have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another.”
Paul gives us one of the most comforting pictures in Scripture: the church as a body. "As the body is one, and has many members, and all the members of the body, being many, are one body; so also is Christ." An eye cannot resign from being a hand. A hand cannot decide it wishes it were an ear. Every part belongs exactly where it was placed.
That last part is the part we forget. A few verses later Paul writes, "God has set the members, each one of them, in the body, just as he desired." You are not in your family, your church, your neighborhood by accident. You were set there — placed, on purpose, by the One who wanted you in that spot.
Comparison is what usually steals our gratitude here. We look at someone else's visible gift — their confidence, their talent, their platform — and conclude our part is small. But bodies do not run on the impressive parts alone. They run on parts nobody applauds: the quiet work of showing up, listening, encouraging, praying, helping without being asked.
Try a small practice today. Thank God, specifically, for three people who are part of your life — the ones who carry you when you are tired and let you carry them when they are. Then, if you can, tell one of them. Gratitude grows fastest when it is spoken out loud.
You are not an extra in someone else's story. You are a member of a body, known by name, needed in your place. That is worth giving thanks for today.
Reflect
Which part of the body around you do you tend to overlook — and which part do you quietly wish you were instead?
Pray
Thank You, God, for placing me where I am, with the people I have. Forgive me for comparing my part to someone else's. Open my eyes to the gift of belonging, and let me be grateful out loud today. Amen.
